Another option for these things might be isoSPI (thanks to the TUBS guys for mentioning it).
This is isolated SPI over a single pair up to 1 Mb/s and 100 m that is very simple and compatible with extremely low power devices.
You could build an isolated digital photodiode (or DAC) that works with a battery for a couple years.

Interesting. It wakes up itself when the master talks to it. In our case we would have to use some circuit that wakes up the ADC and the amplifier to save battery life.
It's too late to use it in this design (Piotr has to finish his thesis), moreover this chip is not available. we hardly managed to buy components for existing design.
We can later on design a dedicated digital board with such functionality. But we would need another master board with some standard interface. That would make sense in case we need a lot of isolated sensors. But in case of photodiodes, I'm not sure if we care about the isolation
