Elaborate on the voltage of the link cable

What are the implications of the link port running at 3.3V “unless a GB or GBC cartridge is plugged in” (as per the readme)? That I shouldn’t be connecting the other end to a real Game Boy (and what would happen if I did)? Some other one?
