Table of contents when title contains markup

When a heading contains markup (for example <abbr>), the corresponding entry in the ToC seems to remove some spaces.
See https://beta.w3.org/standards/types/ for an example:
- one heading is
<abbr title="World Wide Web Consortium">W3C</abbr> Registry Track - the ToC is
W3CRegistry Track

Another example is "
1. Summary table
" where I've had to add two spaces so that the resulting "on this page" navigation displays one space after the number.simonrjones commented
