Selected region not visible

When I try to select a region using ctrl-space and movement keys, I can't see which text is actually included in the region. Commands such as kill-region still work, but it would be nice to see which region I selected before cutting it.

You can type ctrl+space twice to get the region to highlight.
Or you can change this setting to true for the Emacs Pro Essentials package:
