Installation Clarification

Can we clarify in the installation readme what satellite hardware / software we can use for this.
I have several RPI units lying around that I used for testing mycroft with. I would like to repurpose these for HA satellite units but I am unsure if I should use RPIOS before running this install script or something else.

I have just got it running on an RPi4 with standard 64-bit RPi Bullseye install plus Docker, using the details here; #5 (comment)

I am using a Poly Sync 20 speakerphone for mic and speakers, as that is what I have on hand... :)

Cheers.

I would use RPiOS Lite with no GUI seems to take too many resources to do both tasks mine locks up a bunch with the GUI loaded.

I think the idea is this that this turns any linux machine into a satellite. As long as the mic/speaker work on linux, I'm guessing this works.

I believe the reason no hardware is specified, is because it is not limited to any hardware, as bbrendon says.

The requirements are clearly stated, and I expect it may even run on Windows. It certainly does run on RasPi under RasPi OS Lite.

How is Poly Sync 20 speakerphone working for you? Is it plug-and-play on linux? How good is the voice detection range?

Sorry for offtopic.

The Poly is working reasonably well.

  • Voice detection range seems OK, but have not had much of a chance to test it outside the study.
  • Audio quality of the recorded voice is good, and speech to text gives good results
  • Output is loud and clear, when I remember to turn the volume up (defaults to very low on the Pi)
  • Worked seamlessly* plug'n'play under RaspiOS

*It occasionally changes card/slot number on unplug/replug or reboot... ie one time it may be plughw:3,0, but after a reboot it might be plughw:1,0 ... I fixed this by using it's name plughw:CARD=P20,DEV=0 which is always the same.

This unit has a battery and also serves as a power bank (have not tried to power the Pi from it..) so when the power went out recently, the Pi shut off, and the Poly turned itself off to conserve power... Before doing so it loudly announced (in the dark and silence) "Power Off!" ... that had the family going WTF?

Cheers
