Does this need to be ran in kali?

Thanks for reporting. No, absolutely not. A macOS or GNU/Linux would do. I'll improve the error message and documentation, meanwhile: have a look into https://github.com/tasooshi/brutas/blob/master/scripts/local_config.py.example where you can define your own paths.
