More detailed recording of transaction statuses across all stages

Another pull in from #262
Right now we only record transactions as pending/success/failed - we should probably include 'in queue'/subbmitted/retry etc etc, potentially with ages of each status in an api call, so we can check for transactions that are long overdue to succeed. Think macdonalds ordering system!
