Release with a version number?

Would it be possible to make a github release with some version number? The person porting this thing to FreeBSD says there might be problems down the line if they invent an arbitrary version number for what's available now.

Hi,

I will be including a version number on the next commit, due within 48 hours. On a bigger note, if there is any actual code change required to port to FreeBSD please let me know - I'd like to make my mainstream version as portable as possible.
