Sometimes deletes second half of large files

I've heard this reported on IRC, and have seen it on my work application with a very long file. It seemed to cut it at an arbitrary location - not at a clear sexp boundary.

If I use the original, more convoluted code for this, it probably won't have this issue, but I'd rather instead understand what is causing the pushback reader to not properly copy to the file.
