SPELLS does not work after you KULCAD the stairs

The game has a routine that destroys the object tree for everything in your inventory when you KULCAD the stairs. If you type SPELLS while you're falling in the pit, the game will tell you that you have no spells memorized even though you do. If you drop your spell book before you KULCAD the stairs, then SPELLS will work correctly.
