Do you still recommend Spaten format?

It Spaten still being updated / used, or do you recommend another binary geodata format?

I know there is discussion at the osmium-tools about switching OSM away from PBF format. And, while Spaten seems great and performant, it doesn't have a lot of github activity. I am embarking on a new OSM-intensive project and wondering if you would still consider a Spaten-based pipeline to be best practice.
