try this:
press ctrl+alt+f1
if you get a login prompt, make login with your user/password
removes steam-login with:
sudo apt-get remove --purge steam-login
sudo apt-get autoremove
then restart your x server with:
sudo service lightdm restart
hope it helps!
Hi,
thanks for your response!
i tried ctrl+alt+f1- it doesn't help. The machine just behaves as if the
monitor wasn't connected but I double-checked the cables. when I switch
off the monitor and on again it says 'no signal'.
hm.

Ok, can you open the grub screen before computer starts ubuntu?
If yes, try to go to security mode and start a login shell and type those commands I said before.
Hi,
Solved! for some reason now it works again. Wow, I'm so relieved!
Just as an explanation: What I had done was to follow steams advice in
adding some package sources and then updated the whole system. after
that (without reboot since update manager didn't promt me to reboot) I
installed your steam-login script and executed it. Then I saw that my
game would work ok but still wanted to reboot. After that I got the
black screen. Then after restarting around 15 times I didn't even get a
bios or anything. Like the whole lcd wasn't working from the hardware
side. Then after another book - without any measure done it started up
normally.
So, that's all I can say to describe the thing as clearly ayss possible.
anyway thanks for the quick response and greetings from munich,
Holger

Good to know it worked.
I don't think that this was really related to steam login, maybe with updated packages you installed with steam.
