Your first idea is usually wrong. You need to try multiple things and get feedback from real people. Working in the open is better than the alternative.
Backward compatibility vs utopianism.
Progressively hardening of interfaces over time. i.e. easier to change new packages; very hard to change ggplot2 (can only add new things). Make it clear where you are in the lifecycle with the lifecycle badges.
