dialpad operation not consistent

With these versions on ubuntu 17.04:

I have been having issues with the dialpad intermittently not working. I need this to enter a pin for some conferences. My first attempt was to enter the numbers from the dialpad but then I tried from the keyboard.

Is there any to test the operation? It would be a nice visual clue if the dialpad keys highlighted when you pressed an equivalent numeric key on the keyboard.
