Using pavucontrol to adjusting microphone (!?) amplification levels to silenced, and back to previous setting seems to clean up the over-amplification/false noise suppression.
Switching audio input between different microphones seems to have the same effect, but it is working only in one quarter of the cases.
This looks like a noise suppression issue. I am using headphones with the built-in audio card.
