Large markdown tables are broken

When creating a large (wide) markdown table if it is too big to fit the page, the text overlaps and it essentially breaks. Is there a way to have the table/font shrink to the size of the page for wide tables?

Change font size by placing \scriptsize or any other LaTeX font size on a line right before the table, then revert it with \normalsize after the table
