Spindle in error after dashboard went blank

After nothing more than homing, the dashboard went blank. At the same time I could hear a relay click. When the dashboard came back online, the spindle dropped a bit before it went into error and the brake turned on. The error in the terminal (before all of the "max out queue size reached on 0, throwing away old bytes") was:
SPINDLE_Safety: Error of joint q1 exceeded limit (0.01). jointErrors[0] = 0.0101933 output disabled.
