“Cimy User Extra Fields” is open source software.
It seems to compete with the paid version of the profile builder which appears to be proprietary.
Please check it out. Not sure of the implications on existing swag code.
CIMY profile builder
I have tried it and added a location field, it now needs to have a map function added to the location (to verify that the location is a valid google place) and I am good to go.

An essential requirement for LISN is that the user has a mandatory field for their location.
All users must supply at least country and postcode in order to register as members.

In order to do that the profile builder needs to support this requirement, and to allow the user to verify the location as being a valid Google map location, during registration process.

To configure ELGG I used this to add a user location:

The CIMY profile builder does not have location as a defined field type. This will need to be configured as per above...

I just found this plugin which could help in defining the location functionality for selecting field during registration.
