When clicking "Browse Server" from an Image Properties or Link dialog box, the "ckgdoku" media browser pop-up windows works fine. However the traditional "dokuwiki" media browser pops up, items can be selected, but does not return a value into either the dialog box, nor the editor text below it. So it is not usable.

I assume you mean when using the traditional "dokuwiki" media browser.
If so, this has never been reported before, so you can start by checking your error logs to see if anything is being reported there. Then you should refresh your browser cache: CTRL+SHIFT+INS. And completely clear out the dokuwiki cache: data/cache.
Ckgdoku is now being deprecated in favor of ckgedit, which merges ckgdoku into ckgedit and ups CKEditor from 4.7 to 4.9. Ckgdoku will still get critical fixes but not updates. To run ckgedit, you have to disable ckgdoku. If you decide to switch, again clear the caches.
