can't type parentheses in terminal

What device(s) are you experiencing the problem on?
Samsung Pocket Neo

What firmware version are you running on the device?
S5310XXAME1

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. open Python or lua interpreter on mobile phone
2. try to type closing parenthesis ')'
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
expected: closing parenthesis is typed in the terminal
result: the character sequence ^@ appears.
A similar problem happens when typing comma: i see a question mark instead.
The problem persists with both ascii and utf-8 encoding.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Android 4.1.2
