Thank you for pointing out
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1402890
- will be implemented in FF 53.
Thanks for the update. However, I think the feature is still useful for some people until
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1467131
is resolved: It will decrease the size of bookmark backups (which was actually my motivation to implement the feature in the first place).
Moreover, I am not sure whether it would make sense to release a version which requires FF64 with the only reason for dropping a feature. Maybe it is more reasonable to wait with the release without that feature until all ESR versions dropped the description field as well.
Implemented in FF 62:

Thanks. According to the description, I understand that internally the data is still stored (since it can be exported), so for FF 62 the feature might still make sense. Moreover, I want to wait until the last version still supporting the feature is no longer supported.
I have almost no time currently, anyway, so I will probably still wait for almost a year.
All links which I found indicate that descriptions still can be exported.
So AFAIK, this extension is now the only way to get rid of the old description data.
As long as firefox does not clean up the internal storage of this data (or provides a way to do so), I will not remove the feature. Although I found some links where it is claimed that exporting descriptions is only temporary, I found no sign that somebody really works on the removal from the database.
