clock hides notification dot

Normally gnome shell displays a notification dot next to the date and time, if a notification has been missed. Since this clock removes the clock from it's little clock rectangle, it seems to take the notification dot with it. Now, there's no way to tell if notifications have been missed or not without clicking on the clock.
