Threading Address Books mismatch

Since upgrading to 2.1 when I do a sync the messages are not threading
properly. It appears the incoming texts do not have the leading "1" for the
number 1(xxx)xxx-xxxx. So I get 2 seperate emails when I backup one with all
the incoming texts and one for all outgoing. Is there a way to fix the thread
so it will backup properly so I can follow the conversation?
I have tried modifying the address book entry by adding removing the leading 1
but that doesn't change the text information.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
