Disabling the SMS label for IMAP in GMail settings causes app to crash during backup

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Configure GMail account with Outlook 2007 IMAP
2. Make SMS label in GMail not appear in IMAP (mail settings, labels)
3. Attempt to backup messages
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expect a successful backup. Instead, the app crashes and I have to force close
it.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Latest version, Android 2.2.2
Please provide any additional information below.
I was able to make this stop if I allow the SMS label to appear in IMAP
