Probably an espresso bug, however a workaround for this may be posiible ?

Tested on a Nexus 7 with Android 5.1 and was unable to reproduce the issue.

However, the thrown exception:

Caused by: java.lang.RuntimeException: Action will not be performed because the target view does not match one or more of the following constraints:
at least 90 percent of the view's area is displayed to the user.

makes me assume that the contextual action mode failed to open for some odd reason.

a workaround for this may be posiible ?
You could find the view by text, instead by id, but again, this assumes in the first place that the contextual actionbar is displayed.

onView(withText(equalToIgnoringCase("ActionMode1"))).perform(click());

or

onView(withContentDescription(equalToIgnoringCase("ActionMode1"))).perform(click());

The problem was animations being enabled in developer options. According to Google they should be disabled when running espresso tests.

The latest relevant Developer option is "Transition animation scale", it is defaulted to 1.0, but should be dropped to 0.0 for the espresso tests.
