Per-node database configuration?

Sometimes on some hosting providers (ahem, Rackspace), we need the database configuration file to point to a different host / IP than the ones on the app servers (because the IP on the host is different from the external IP that's routed through a firewall). I'm not sure if / how this is possible, but wanted to document it.
Right now, I'm just logging into the server and changing the hostname manually on the configuration file (in the shared/config directory).

Could use the role to set the right one? :app vs. :db
