Could this be addressed or, perhaps, could minification be added as a feature of the crawler?

Yes, that would be useful for incorporating minification into the process, though, it would still be useful (if there was a simple enough solution) fo the crawl to respect exiting minification that would ordinarily be triggered by a more traditional human browser.
