[Feature request]: ffplay instead of vlc

I'd like to see multiple camera streams on my screen. In my case I deal with rtsp streams. There is a huge difference in performance when comparing vlc over ffplay. ffplay loads stream faster and is more tolerant to package loss which results in reloading stream in vlc case.
The question is whether it's possible to force vlc use libav when playing rtsp streams. If not any thoughts on option to switch playback engine from vlc to ffplay?

Also live555 (live666) should be even better with streams.
