Syntax in Org mode for this has changed at some point, so need to revisit the feature too: http://orgmode.org/manual/Quoting-HTML-tags.html#Quoting-HTML-tags

Hi!
This is a significant change in syntax. The current realization of HTML tags uses some tricks, which should be removed. Hopefully, I will have time to look at the code.
