fontsizes don't work for symbols such as \sum

I am using \huge to increase the text size of .pdf_tex figures. This works fine, apart for the \sum symbol. Somehow that symbol doesn't scale in the thesis template. In a standard .tex file this works fine (using the amsmath package).

Any ideas on how to solve this?
