It should not be possible for the first nav item to have sub items

It seems like it just creates confusion. :) It'd be great if there was a way for us to capture that first item and say no. Maybe on menu creation?

Hmmm. I reckon it is too coercive too prevent first link subnav altogether. The home link as first link is strongly encouraged in our standards, not required. There will be legitimate exceptions. I think education is in order here instead of programmatic strong-arming. Perhaps a soft way to accomplish this would be to auto create a first nav item that links to home and has the label $site-name Home.
