Failed to switch modes: "Garbage metamode" error

I have an HP Elitebook 8560w running Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64.
I don't have a version for autorandr, sorry.
I have three autorandr profiles loaded: home work undocked. More info
below. Ctrl-F8 runs: "auto-disper-log.sh --change". This is a wrapper
script around auto-disper to get logging of what the program does.
auto-disper-log.sh:
---[start]-----
!/bin/bash
/home/schadsey/bin/auto-disper "$@" >> /home/schadsey/logs/auto-disper.log 2>&1
---[end]-----
I have been using the program for about a month without any serious
problems. On Friday 2012-08-17 my laptop was in "home" mode and I put it in
hibernation. This morning I docked it at work and resumed it. The display
output went to my work monitors which are not the same resoution as home.
I undocked the laptop, hit ctrl-F8, which brought the display to the
laptop's LCD. I re-docked the laptop and hit ctrl-F8 and noted this output:
---[start]-----
Assuming disper defaults...
home
undocked
work (detected)
-> loading profile work
Garbage metamode: restart X before changing the display configuration to avoid crashes in the nVidia driver
---[end]-----
Manually running "auto-disper -l work --force" had the same result.
I was not able to send the X output to the external monitors. I had
to close all my applications and log out of X in order to get things
working again.
