Release selection default sometimes not the first selection

I have now several times incorrectly tagged a rip, and then been confused why it wasn't tagged as expected, and had to re-rip it.

I've discovered that this is because the release selection default sometimes (on some releases) ended up NOT being the first release listed, which is extremely non-intuitive and (IMHO) incorrect. I'm not sure why it sometimes puts the default as a release that is listed later, it usually seems to be the first one, and this bug only occurs on some releases.
