consider switching completely to fork-awesome

I just discovered that font-awesome became proprietary since v5. I was under the impression that they were still free software. Then I was thinking the requirement for fork-awesome to exist and went to discover from their README this FortAwesome/Font-Awesome#12199 (comment).

It was really a disappointing discovery. But it was simultaneously encouraging to know that there was an almost drop-in alternative that was free software at the same time as well.

I quickly went through the repository and think that all the icons can be replaced with fork-awesome. We are already using fork-awesome for the Matrix and PixelFed icons. We might as well use all the other icons from the same package. It would also reduce the size of the resources to be downloaded for the website.

I am a strong supporter of free software. Hence this plea to switch to free software. I do not know how the maintainers of this project feel about it, hence I did not put in the effort to switch to fork-awesome directly and open a pull request. If the maintainers think this is a good option, then I am willing to make the necessary changes to switch completely to fork-awesome.

I compared the existing list of supported icons with fork-awesome.

There are 6 existing services that do not have alternatives on fork-awesome :

  1. Blogger
  2. Ello
  3. Goodreads
  4. Kickstarter
  5. Teamspeak
  6. Untappd

All of the other icons have drop-in replacements including the fas icons that is used elsewhere in the project. Only a few of them require renaming ( other than the obvious fab -> fa ).

I think this is a good idea. I'll add it to the queue. Thank you!
