No page number despite commenting option\nopagenumber

I keep the following option commented but I still have no page number at all. My resume is longer than one page and use the classic style.
%\nopagenumbers{} % uncomment to suppress automatic page numbering for CVs longer than one page
I also had missing page numbers in classic style and found out that it was caused by the marvosym icons. I changed the corresponding line in moderncvstyleclassic.sty to \moderncvicons{awesome}
to use the awesome icon set and now it works. No idea why.
Hi there, I've been using the template for a lot of years and used to see the page numbers in the past. But I've also realized that in the new builds of my CV, the page numbers do not show up (so I lost them at some point and can't find the reason).
This may help to add the page number "back": https://tex.stackexchange.com/a/210773/154993
but hopefully it could be directly addressed in the moderncv package.
