how to have unlisted content

so I created a content/misc folder for everything that I didn't want listed on my page.
ie. content I want to be able to link to but which isn't accessible otherwise.
it works. but now normal posts don't show up on the homepage anymore either.
everything is fine again when I remove misc.

is there a way to keep posts unlisted without breaking the site?

sidenote: issue doesn't happen when drafts are turned on (ie hugo serve -D)
