All is in the title: the sonatype repositories are needed for the project to work.

Yes but https://github.com/svenefftinge/maven-xtext-example/blob/master/example-project/pom.xml do not depend at all on it, so it has no way of knowing it when running maven there.
I experienced it the first time I called mvn in example-project: it couldn't find xtext-maven-plugin.
