See my posts in the community forum for a description of the issue, and also my proposed solution.
I can also submit a PR, although I can't get to it yet.

Closing this issue because:
- my proposed fix was not a complete solution
- It seems likely that the underlying issue will be solved in Notepad++ anyway
Will reopen if it looks like there's a need.
