Great project, maybe an idea for the future

That's a great project (discovered through TeachingTech video) so just an idea that may complement it

If the analyser had a daughter card with a hall effect sensor that you could mount to the rear of the stepper (+magnet on the stepper axis) that would also allow to measure the linearity of the stepper movement which would be really interesting (for instance to evaluate Vertical Fine Artefacts created by steppers on 3D printers)

While the precision may not be sufficient to make a fine analysis, if you make a bench where the stepper axis is connected to a speed multiplier train with 2x80/16 teeth pulleys + belts in series and you measure the movement on the outlet axis (x25 compared to the stepper axis) you can probably get interesting and more accurate results

Cheers

Greg, your idea is very interesting, and and there are other product configurations that can be derived from this simple concept that is demonstrated by the analyzer design here. For example, a small board, with sensors to 1, 2 or 3 steppers, and a microcontroller with USB data connector, no LCD, which connects to an app on a computer (the sensors are galvanically isolated so it's safe) that performs the cross motor analysis (e.g. head x,y in a coreXY system). Hardware cost should be minimal.

The design was published with minimal restrictions (CC0, public domain license) to encourage makers and entrepreneurs to pick the idea and provide products to the community. Did I hear 'Kickstarter' ? I would definitely buy one.

would it also possible to buy the unit from you?

Hi Alex, Unfortunately I don't have the capabilities to manufacture them so put them in the public domain with no commercial restrictions with the hope that some entrepreneur will manufacture and make them available to the community. Zapta.

Hi Zapta

interesting...I can try to manufacture a small batch of this project and sell it on my website.
If you are interested in this kind of cooperation visit www-fm-laser.ch and get in contact with me through the contact form, ok?

Take care and hear you soon,
Alex
