I'd be glad to see my location as compass-based device turn (the same way as it works in Google Maps), and small scale on the bottom.

Definitely a good idea, the scale was planned either way (issue #26), but showing the direction user is facing should be helpful. I think all of these map improvements will be added as part of migrating to google maps api v2.
P.S. that's strange- it builds fine on my Jenkins CI server which runs on linux.
