Gracefully handle names with trailing period

As mentioned in #244, we don't gracefully handle names with trailing period, even though this commonly occurs. We should consider whether we should strip periods from and look them up as is most convenient. I don't see any downsides offhand, but want to see if other folks have concerns about us changing this functionality.
