This site contains analysis code accompanying the paper "In the Room Where It Happens: Characterizing Local Communication and Threats in Smart Homes" in proceedings of the ACM Internet Measurement Conference 2023 (IMC 2023), October 2023, Montreal, Canada.

Paper official page (with all the material): https://android-observatory.github.io/iotlan/.

Additional traffic analysis code can be found here: https://github.com/NEU-SNS/IoT-local The site also contains instructions for requesting access to the full dataset: https://moniotrlab.khoury.northeastern.edu/iot-local-dataset-imc23/

File Structure

Each subdirectory shows samples for processing pcap files for destination, encryption, and content analysis.

  • active-scans/ - Code for active scanner and the analysis scripts
  • honeypot/ - Code for the honeypots used.
  • traffic-analysis/ - Code for IoT local traffic analysis and classification
  • app-analysis/ - Dataset and analysis code for mobile app traffic and behaviour analysis.

IoT Inspector data

Researchers interested in the IoT Inspector data can contact us through the email listed on the project website (https://iotinspector.org/). We will then seek approval from New York University’s IRB first and then contact the researchers for their own IRB approval (if needed). IRB approval is needed because the data may potentially include sensitive user contents.
