Newer Super Mario Bros. DS Version: 1.16 (February 4, 2022) ================ 1. Requirements ================ 1. An untrimmed New Super Mario Bros. ROM (Japan, US, EUR, KOR, or CHN regions). 2. A computer running Windows XP or newer, macOS Sierra or newer, Linux, or a way to apply xdelta patches. 3. A way to play the ROM: DS flashcarts, emulators, etc. ================================ 2. Tested devices and emulators ================================ Emulators: ---------- - DeSmuMe 0.9.11 Works pretty much perfectly, but requires a hefty computer. Make sure dynamic recompilation is checked in the emulation settings. Later releases of DeSmuMe include an upscaling option, which might produce small graphical problems, especially during the credits. - MelonDS 0.9.1 Works with sound problems and slight slowdown at times. - Medusa ROM worked on the first alpha release; does not anymore. - DraStic for Android Works perfectly. - OpenEmu for macOS Works perfectly. - No$GBA 2.7+ Works fine, but many graphical elements don't work -- 3D in particular. Not recommended for gameplay. - Wii U Virtual Console ("HachiHachi") Support for this was added in Newer DS 1.14. Works fine, albeit with all the issues that DS Virtual Console titles on Wii U generally bring. You may want to adjust the emulator's brightness; by default, it's quite dark. It's in the emulator's configuration_cafe.json file, under "Brightness". Flashcarts: ----------- - Acekard 2.1/Acekard 2.1i Works perfectly on latest AKAIO. - Supercard DSTWO Works mostly fine in "patch" mode. Slight graphical glitches or slowdown might occur, same as with the original game. - R4 Works perfectly with the latest Wood firmware. - Other flashcarts will probably work as well, as long as they support New Super Mario Bros. Other: ------ - TWLoader/SRLoader/TWiLightMenu++ with nds-bootstrap Seems to work fine with Mario Kart DS set as donor ROM; tested on TWiLightMenu++ v20.2.1 with nds-bootstrap v0.40.2. nds-bootstrap updates sometimes break the game, so if you experience problems on more recent releases, try downgrading to that version. Also ensure that the "DMA Card Read" setting is set to "Off". ============ 3. Patching ============ To make a copy of Newer DS, you need a copy of a clean New Super Mario Bros. ROM from any region. You're on your own to obtain one, via whatever means are available to you. After obtaining an .nds file of New Super Mario Bros., extract the contents of the downloaded zip somewhere on your computer and run the patcher program designated for your operating system. For Linux and macOS users: you will first need to install the latest Python 3 release for your system, which will allow you to run the .py script. After installing Python, run the following commands in a terminal window to install other libraries (PyQt5 is required, xdelta3 is optional): python3 -m pip install PyQt5 python3 -m pip install xdelta3 After this, you will be able to launch the patch_wizard.py script. (If double-clicking the file doesn't work, run "python3 patch_wizard.py" in a terminal window after navigating to patch_wizard.py's directory.) Follow the instructions on-screen, and you should end up with a patched NDS file. If you're unable to run the program, look around for a way to apply xdelta patches to files on your operating system. Get an md5 hash of your ROM and apply the xdelta whose filename matches. =================== 4. Troubleshooting =================== 1. The game crashes at any point. --------------------------------- If you're playing the game on any of the mentioned compatible flashcarts, try to back up and format your SD card using the SD Association's card formatter: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/. If this does not fix your issue, please contact admin@newerteam.com, preferably with a screenshot of the crash dump the game should produce. Please include a detailed set of instructions on how to reproduce the crash. 2. The game is slow! -------------------- Generally, this means your computer is not powerful enough to run DS emulators. Nevertheless, below follows a list of fixes. - If using DeSmuMe, try to enable frameskipping under Config->Frame Skip and enable dynamic recompilation under Config->Emulation settings. If using DeSmuMe on Linux, you have to run the emulator with the "--cpu-mode=1" parameter from the terminal. - If running on a Windows laptop, try to go into Maximum Performance mode, available in the battery settings. Be sure to have the computer plugged in, as well; otherwise, the CPU is throttled to conserve power. - On DSTWO, try to enable the "clean" mode. You will need a regular, non-SDHC SD card for this, however, as the SDHC support for clean mode is shoddy. 3. The patcher says my ROM is unsupported! ------------------------------------------ Your ROM might be not a clean New Super Mario Bros. ROM, or you might have not unpacked all the xdelta patches fom the .zip properly. Please note that since 1.05, we have dropped support for trimmed ROMs, and ROMs from regions other than Japan, Europe, America, Korea and China have never been supported. ============= 5.
