Why is the source in a zip file and not in the repo?

I assume this is a pseudo-fork of Prusa Firmware....

1. Shouldn't this be an actual fork so that it can pull in the new features and bug fixes that Prusa releases?
2. It'd be nice to maintain the source outside of a zip file so that you can track changes, make forks, and PRs.
3. It would also be nice to manage versions with branches instead of folders.
