Hey, i really like the minimap idea and made locally some changes to make it look like this
Is this something you are interested in?
Currently only locally prototyped, but i personally like that "real minimap" feeling.
Maybe as option?

Feel free to create a pull request for it. (although the borderlessness is currently already in the master, encompassed in the Enable/Disable Overlay Mode keybind of Ctrl+D, so maybe you would like to make it interact with that (e.g. only go into a circle if in overlay mode and the setting is enabled.
