An Enigma cipher machine (German: Enigma, also known as an Enigma cipher machine, dummy cipher machine, odd cipher machine or enigma cipher machine) is a type of cipher machine used to encrypt and decrypt files. To be precise, Enigma is a collective name for a series of similar rotor-mechanical encryption and decryption machines used in Nazi Germany during World War II, which included a number of different models for stream encryption of cryptographic symmetric encryption algorithms.
