These Garmin GPX files are optimized for the Garmin Instinct, which has a 15-character name limit.
To import these files, follow these steps:
- On your Garmin watch, add the map view for the kayak activity.
- Import each file as a new collection using Garmin Explore. Note that you can import the waypoint file as either Tracks or Routes.
- Select all the waypoints in each collection to set an icon. I recommend using the icons that render nicely on the Instinct:
You can find GPX files for many other rivers (such as Salt, Grand Canyon, Green, etc.) at RiverMaps. I recommend breaking them up into different categories, including campsites, milestones, points of interest (POI), and rapids. Additionally, keep the files to a maximum of 99 waypoints, as some Garmin devices have a collection size limitation. To assist with preprocessing, I’ve included a parseRiverMaps.py script that automates breaking apart the GPX into multiple files.
