FLARE VM

Welcome to FLARE VM - a fully customizable, Windows-based security distribution for malware analysis, incident response, penetration testing, etc.

Please see https://www.fireeye.com/blog/threat-research/2018/11/flare-vm-update.html for a blog on installing FLARE VM.

Update

Starting with version 2.0, FLARE VM has introduced breaking changes with previous versions. A fresh installation in a clean Virtual Machine is recommended.

Starting with version 2.0, FLARE VM uses the following environment variables:

  • TOOL_LIST_DIR: The default value is set to %PROGRAMDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\FLARE.
  • TOOL_LIST_SHORTCUT: The default value is set to %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\FLARE.lnk.

The installer script sets those environment variables automatically. If there are issues during installation, please verify that those environment variables are set correctly.

Installation (Install Script)

  • Create and configure a new Windows Virtual Machine
    • Ensure VM is updated completely. You may have to check for updates, reboot, and check again until no more remain
  • Take a snapshot of your machine!
  • Download and copy install.ps1 on your newly configured machine.
  • Open PowerShell as an Administrator
  • Enable script execution by running the following command:
    • Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
  • Finally, execute the installer script as follows:
    • .\install.ps1
    • You can also pass your password as an argument: .\install.ps1 -password <password> ``

The script will set up the Boxstarter environment and proceed to download and install the FLARE VM environment. You will be prompted for the Administrator password in order to automate host restarts during installation.

Customizing packages

  • NOTE: By customizing your own packages list, you will NOT automatically get the newly added packages by simply running cup all. You can always manually install a new package by using cinst or choco install command.
  • For a list of available packages to use, please refer to the following URL
  • Create and configure a new Windows Virtual Machine.
  • Take your initial snapshot before installing FLARE VM
  • Download and copy install.ps1 on to your new VM
  • Download and copy profile.json on to your new VM
  • Download and copy flarevm.installer.flare directory on to your new VM
  • Modify the profile.json file:
    • Most of the fields within env data should be left unchanged.
    • Modify the packages list in the JSON file to only include the packages you would like to install. Please refer to the following URL for a full list of packages available
  • Open PowerShell as an Administrator
  • Enable script execution by running the following command:
    • Set-ExecutionPolicy unrestricted
  • Finally, execute the installer by providing profile.json using the -profile_file switch, assuming profile.json, install.ps1 and flarevm.installer.flare are all in the same directory:
    • .\install.ps1 -profile_file profile.json
    • Optionally, you can also pass the following flags:
      • -password <current_user_password>: Use the specified password instead of prompting user

Installation (Manually)

First, install BoxStarter. All commands are expected to be executed with Administrator privileges.

If you are using PowerShell v2:

Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
iex ((New-Object System.Net.WebClient).DownloadString('http://boxstarter.org/bootstrapper.ps1')); get-boxstarter -Force

And PowerShell v3 or newest:

Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
. { iwr -useb http://boxstarter.org/bootstrapper.ps1 } | iex; get-boxstarter -Force

Next, you can deploy FLARE VM environment as follows

Install-BoxstarterPackage -PackageName https://raw.githubusercontent.com/fireeye/flare-vm/master/install.ps1

NOTE: The old installation method using the webinstaller link is now deprecated.

Installing a new package

FLARE VM uses the chocolatey public and custom FLARE package repositories. It is easy to install a new package. For example, enter the following command as Administrator to deploy x64dbg on your system:

cinst x64dbg

Staying up to date

Type the following command to update all of the packages to the most recent version:

cup all

Malware Analysis with FLARE VM
