compute/plot discrete rates and the time-averaged discrete rate

• change average finite time rate, instead of dividing by N-1, divide by N
• add time-averaged rate as a dash line in the plot
• change to black and white. Use dots and circles.
• reconfigure legend (smaller size and where to place best?)
