Elemental Planes:
VOID, AETHER, FIRE, WATER, AIR, WOOD, METAL
Populated with lots of spirits of the element (The plane isnt formed of the element, only the spirits are) Each plane contains one super powerful spirit (probably formed from consuming/merging with loads of other spirits). Boss spirit dude is powerful, but not all powerful (not omniscient, not omnipresent, is just a super strong spirit)
Gods:
These are really powerful spirits formed from belief. i.e. LUCK, DESIRE, SECRETS
The amount of belief effects their strength. Also active belief is stronger than passive (i.e. A person hoping for luck = small power, a person praying to the God of luck = lots of power)
LUCK very strong
DESIRE the strongest
SECRETS relatively weak
Gods travel around and offer deals and stuff, trying to create more active believers. Will offer power and other stuffs in return.
Creation story:
Time does not exist. Hence there was no 'before', only an always. (note, time was created in the AETHER plane to help house the matter, along with all the other physical laws.)
First there were the planes of VOID, FIRE, WATER, AIR, WOOD, METAL, AETHER. They had thriving groups of spirits. Boss spirit of AETHER wanted power. He invaded the plane of VOID and took everything. Using his new armies he invaded all the other planes and took some of their spirits back to AETHER. Those spirits were converted into energy and therefore into matter. And that was how the plane of matter was formed (the spirits of AETHER become the 'soul'). The spirits of each of the elements formed the physical matter of the universe, all bonded together with VOID to create what we see today. (Water = created from water spirits, Growth = powered by wood spirits etc hence why spirits of that element control the elements in AETHER better).
More and more AETHER 'souls' are being created to put into the bodies being born, and these 'souls' are created from the spirits of the other planes. This means the amount of spirits of the other planes currently in this plane are being reduced and therefore priests of AETHER and AETHER himself are venturing into the planes are enslaving more and more spirits, to replenish the world.
Motives:
VOID Pissed that AETHER took all his subject spirits. Made some more spirits from his own self. Weak and vengeful. (VOID annihalates)
AETHER wanted to rule all the planes, but wasn't strong enough to rule the other planes directly, so instead he decided to bring the spirits from the other planes into his plane and therefore rule everything that way (AETHER encompasses)
FIRE stupid and destuctive. Hardly notices his spirits are disappearing. (FIRE burns)
WATER wants to keep stuff the same. Attempting to stop AETHER by infiltrating and seeding chaos. (WATER erodes)
AIR will ally with anyone, and fight noone. It's spirits are the least harvested cause they are hard to catch/find (AIR flows)
WOOD most opposed to AETHER. Actively fighting against (most of the weird creatures are from WOOD) (WOOD grows)
METAL planning to take over AETHER from within, then rule the rest (Teaches magitek :p) (METAL controls)
As the human form is created from many many spirits, and is therefore very very powerful (in pure energy, even the weakest human is equal or greater than the strongest spirits in each plane). However this energy is not harnessable, as it is focused all the time into keeping reality in existence, and just existing itself. Hence why in fighting power humans are less than the other spirits, yet are formed of many times more spirits (and therefore power).
Elemental planes are formed of nothing, no time no anything. However when exploring the planes your powerful mind and spirit force structure onto the plane, creating time and forming the landscape you see depending on the attitudes and feelings of the spirits in the area (i.e. areas around majestic spirits will look like castles and palaces)
The Plane of AETHER:

Theocracy / empire
Lots of small towns ruled by a church/palace
Church wants to dig down and destroy the source of the monsters. Sends expeditions into the caverns/complexes below the ground to try to find the source of the monsters.
Portals:
Portals into the plane of AETHER are rare, and random. Attempting to open a portal into AETHER (or between any planes) is pure guesswork (due to there being no tangible connection betwen the planes) a portal opened in the same location twice will lead to different points each time. The few portals that are opened are generally single use, though with special rituals the portals can be reopened (but will obviously lead to different locations).
A single huge portal exists in the Belowlands, kept open by the powerful magics of the lord of plane of LIFE. This is a special spot, as it is surrounded by the remains of millions and millions of spirits (from the Ascension), and therefore the lord of the plane of LIFE can be constantly supplied by the energy to keep the portal open.

The spirits of LIFE are trying to wipe out the Lord of AETHER and his followers. To do this they have been trying to send beasts through the Land to kill everyone. So far this has not been successful (they killed lots of irrelevant people, but are no closer to do any significant damage). So they have a better plan. They are going to build giant muscle-towers to the base of the Land, and pull it down to the Belowlands so that they can swarm over it and kill everything.
Other:
Tithes - The empire demands tithes every year. This consists of food. Additionally they empire promises to pay any males that join the army very handsomly (silver and gold are used as a currency), and therefore lots of males join the army all the time.
Empire - The empire is ruled by the Lord of the AETHER and is a theocracy. It is formed at the high levels of the Lord of AETHER's most trusted spirit allies, and then less trusted as the ranks go down. It has a large army that is used to fight off the spirits of LIFE attacking, and used to invade the other planes to collect more spirits.
Army - Formed of only the loyal people. People who joined who turn out not to be loyal are fed to the loyal ones, so that the loyal ones can receive their spiritual energies.
Lord of AETHER - The lord of AETHER and his trusted spirits bound themselves into the bodies they had designed, and used them to invade the other planes. However effective this might have been, it turns out that the bodies cannot be unbound from, meaning they are all stuck in the bodies they designed. Because of this any research into the improvement of the bodies is prohibitted (they don't want to be usurbed by a mk.II body :p). Not that many people know of the truth of history, and therefore don't know to do research anyway lol.
You - You are not a normal human. You are the product of a rogue spirit of AETHER (a worshipper of the God of Secrets), and you are a body mk.II.
Improvements:
Perfect matter to energy conversion (no waste products).
Much much faster energy conversion.
A spirit formed of a true mix of spirits. However it contains no VOID spirit parts (cause they are damned hard to get).
Food - The lord of AETHER and his most trusted spirits tried many different techniques for utalising spirits, for empowering themselves. They were unable to directly absorb the spirits into themselves, and unable to utalise them directly. They found, however, that a mass of spirits can be coaxed to form matter. When experimenting with this matter they also noticed that certain configurations had the effect of drawing the spiritual energy of anything placed within it to a certain location. This filtered spiritual energy was then possible to bind another spirit too, and this bound spirit could control the energy. With this knowledge in mind they decided to design a vessel, designed around consuming and filtering spiritual energy. The vessel needed to be as efficient as possible, with the least spiritual wastage in powering the vessel (powering / binding together). Therefore they designed a human (bipedal, spiritual energy is filtered in the stomach, spiritless matter residue goes out the bottom, and the spiritual energy is collected and stored in the brain). The spirit is bound into the brain, from which it can control the rest of the figure and also use the spiritual energy to do shizzle. When the body is damaged the energy contained in the brain is turned towards repairing it, and seeing as the spirit is in the brain too if the body gets damaged too much it will absorb the spirit bound to it then whenthe spirit is gone it will die completely. This also goes for starvation, don't eat enough and the body will burn the spirit it houses and then will die. The body ages slowly, however this aging can be stopped if enough spiritual energy is poured into it.
This means that beings that consume a lot have a lot of spiritual energy. (i.e. nobles are complete bosses :p)
Another thing these bodies are 'programmed' to do is that when not within the plane of AETHER, they will burn spiritual energy to force AETHER-like structure onto the plane surrounding them.
Reproduction - The female takes roughly half her current spiritual energy, and a small portion of her spirit and combines it with the spiritual energy (and spirit portion) provided by the male. This is then processed into a new AETHER spirit (assuming both parents are AETHER :p). Then some of the females body (pre-prepared) is filled with this spirit and then left to grow inside the female (fed by some of her spiritual energy gathered) until birth. The act of sharing spirits passes on knowledge (i.e. how to control the body).
